Applications for a 117.6 MW wind power project in the Pincher Creek area


The Alberta Utilities Commission is currently considering applications from Enel Alberta Wind Inc. and AltaLink Management Ltd. for the Riverview Wind Power Plant project to construct 28 4.2-megawatt (MW) turbines with a total generating capability of 117.6 MW and a collector substation in the Municipal District of Pincher Creek. A hearing will be held on April 30, 2019, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, as indicated in the notice of hearing that was issued on February 14, 2019.

In its application, the Alberta Electric System Operator applied for approval of the need to connect the Riverview Wind Power Plant to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. The AUC issued a notice of application for the Riverview Wind Power Plant project on September 4, 2018. 

As part of the application, Enel Alberta Wind Inc. applied to construct and operate the Riverview Wind Power Plant that would consist of 28 4.2-MW turbines and a collector substation, designated as the Riverview Project Collector Substation.

The 28 wind turbines are proposed to be located within the Municipal District of Pincher Creek within Sections 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 18, Township 7, Range 29, west of the Fourth Meridian.

AltaLink Management Ltd. applied to construct the facilities to meet the need identified by the Alberta Electric System Operator, including approval to add one 240-kilovolt (kV) circuit breaker and associated equipment to the existing Castle Rock Ridge 205S Substation.

Enel Alberta Wind Inc. has also applied in a separate application for a wind power plant called the Castle Rock Ridge Phase II project (Proceeding 23753). This project is also located in the Municipal District of Pincher Creek and would consist of seven wind turbines, each rated at 4.2 MW. Phase II was originally approved to consist of 14 wind turbines, each rated at 2.31 MW, located within Sections 14 and 15, Township 7, Range 30, west of the Fourth Meridian.
