TransAlta Sundance Unit 1 and 2 Decommissioning Costs

TransAlta Sundance Unit 1 and 2 Decommissioning Costs

The AUC is reviewing an application for approval to recover the costs associated with decommissioning the Sundance 1 and 2 generating units

Overview

The Alberta Utilities Commission is currently considering an application from TransAlta Corporation for approval to recover the costs associated with the decommissioning of the Sundance 1 and 2 generating units. The costs applied for in the decommissioning costs application include the future decommissioning costs of the Sundance 1 and 2 generating units, a proportionate share of costs to reclaim the Highvale Mine and costs for the reclamation of other associated facilities.

If approved, the costs will be paid by the Balancing Pool.

The AUC has scheduled a pre-hearing meeting on Thursday, January 30, 2020, in the Eau Claire Tower second floor conference room in Calgary. The in-person pre-hearing meeting before the AUC panel will be used to:

  • develop a final issues list
  • determine a process schedule
  • address motions for further responses
  • address other party requests or procedural matters

A notice of hearing was issued informing parties of the process schedule that included a hearing commencement date of February 24, 2020.

On October 24, 2019, the AUC approved a request by TransAlta Corporation to respond to information requests later than the stipulated date set out in the notice of hearing. The AUC also afforded parties an opportunity to propose an alternate process schedule by November 8, 2019. Parties filed an alternate process schedule requesting a hearing start date of October 19, 2020.
