Windrise Connection Project

Windrise Connection Project

The AUC is considering an application for a new transmission line in the Fort Macleod area

The AUC is currently reviewing an application from Windrise Wind Energy Inc. for approval of a new 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line to connect the approved Windrise Wind Power Project to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System.

The transmission line would be connected from the approved Windrise 1063S Substation to the existing Windy Flats 138S Substation. The map below identifies the applied-for routes, which include a preferred route and two alternate routes. The AUC may approve the preferred route or one of the alternate routes.

The AUC will be holding a hearing on May 12, 2020 in Lethbridge to review the applications and submissions received to consider the electric transmission development applications. A notice of application was issued on December 18, 2019.

The AUC is offering to hold an information session to discuss the hearing process via teleconference. The merits of the application will not be discussed during the information session. If the AUC receives a request for an information session, the session would take place at a convenient time for the intervener(s) prior to February 28, 2020.

The Windrise Wind Power Project is under construction and will consist of 43 turbines with a total generating capability of 206.4 megawatts. The project will include an underground collector system, a meteorological tower, access roads and other associated components. Each turbine will be approximately 90 metres high, with a rotor diameter of 145 meters, and would have a maximum generating capability of 4.8 megawatts.
