Special Inquiries 
 

On March 25, 2010 the Alberta Utilities Commission was directed to hold three separate inquiries through Order-in Council 93/2010, and report to Alberta's Minister of Energy on the the results of the inquiries. The order in council contained the following three schedules outlining the terms of reference for each in inquiry:

Schedule A - Terms of Reference on Hydroelectric Power Generation Development

Schedule B – Terms of Reference on the Alberta Smart Grid

Schedule C – Terms of Reference on the harmonization of the RRO and DGS Regulation

The AUC will use the information, submissions and consultations gathered from its inquiries to prepare reports to the minister on all three inquiries. The reports will provide findings, pros and cons, and options on relevant issues, but will not make recommendations.

Hydroelectric Power Generation Development in Alberta

The Hydroelectric Power Generation Development Inquiry was released August 30, 2011.

The AUC was directed to review the regulatory approval process for hydroelectric facilities.

The AUC held roundtable discussions for registered participants in the inquiry to gather information with respect to the regulatory process for hydroelectric power generation development. The dates and locations of the roudtable discussions were as follows:

Alberta Smart Grid

The AUC was directed to review how smart grid technology, such as advanced metering or smart metering infrastructure, can be used to modernize the electricity system in Alberta. The Commission will conduct its inquiry with members of the Alberta electrtic industry and other relevant parties.

The Alberta Smart Grid Inquiry final report was released June 2, 2011.

Harmonization of Regulated Rate Option (RRO) Regulation and Default Gas Supply (DGS) Regulation

The AUC was directed to review of the harmonization of the RRO and DGS regulations which relate to the provision of regulated gas and electric retail energy services to consumers.

The Regulated Retail Energy Harmonization Inquiry was released in December 2011.
