Overview
The Alberta Utilities Commission has approved applications from Alberta Infrastructure, on behalf of Alberta Health Services for the Foothills Medical Centre Power Plant Expansion Project to expand the existing Foothills Medical Centre Power Plant and add a connection to ENMAX Power Corporation’s existing distribution system to support the growth of the hospital and the future needs of the new cancer care facility that is currently under construction. The AUC issued its decision on May 7, 2020.
A public hearing was held for the Foothills Medical Centre Power Plant Project on February 3, 2020 in the William Andrew Grieve Hearing Room.
The expansion will consist of the addition of one 8-megawatt gas turbine generator, which would result in a total power plant generating capability of 23 megawatts. The additional equipment will be located in a new building on developed land next to the existing power plant located at 3133 Hospital Drive N.W., within the city of Calgary.
The existing power plant has been in operation for over 50 years and generates steam for heating, humidification, cooling and sterilization purposes at the buildings in the Foothills Medical Complex. Electricity is generated as a by-product of the steam generation and supplements the electricity supplied by ENMAX Power Corporation for use at the complex.
