Overview
The Alberta Utilities Commission has approved applications from Cascade Power GP Ltd. for the first phase of the Cascade Power Plant Project. The AUC issued Decision 24081-D01-2019 on October 8, 2019.
Cascade Power GP Ltd. has been approved to construct and operate a 900‑megawatt combined cycle natural gas power plant. The power plant would be developed in two 450‑megawatt phases, with each phase requiring the installation of one gas turbine and one steam turbine. The first phase of the project would be in service by the third quarter of 2022, with the second phase in service by the fourth quarter of 2022.
Cascade Power GP Ltd. is required to finalize their environmental protection plan and air monitoring prior to construction.
The power plant would be located on Crown land in the west half of Section 28, Township 52, Range 18, west of the Fifth Meridian, approximately 12 kilometres southwest of Edson in Yellowhead County.
Applications for the interconnection of the proposed power plant to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System will be the subject of separate applications, to be filed at a later date.
The AUC issued a notice of application for the project on March 20, 2019.
