What we do

The Alberta Utilities Commission is an independent, quasi-judicial agency of the province of Alberta. The AUC is responsible to ensure that the delivery of Alberta’s utility service takes place in a manner that is fair, responsible and in the public interest.

We regulate investor-owned natural gas, electric and water utilities and certain municipally owned electric utilities to ensure that customers receive safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates. The AUC ensures that electric facilities are built, operated and decommissioned in an efficient and environmentally responsible way. The AUC also provides regulatory oversight of issues related to the development and operation of the wholesale electricity market in Alberta as well as the retail gas and electricity markets in the province.

The ideal candidate

Please note that the internal title for this position will be regulatory analyst student.

As a regulatory analyst student in our Facilities division, you will gain hands-on experience reviewing and analyzing applications for electric transmission facilities and power plants based on provincial and federal legislation and standards. You will work alongside experienced regulatory analysts and professional engineers as you navigate exciting work that impacts Albertans while developing an understanding of AUC rules, policies, and practices.

Key responsibilities 

• Evaluate and process the engineering and technical components of facility applications and supporting documentation.
• Develop the ability to recognize deficiencies in applications and prepare correspondence in accordance with AUC requirements to improve the AUC’s understanding of the applications.
• Provide support to other staff and the Commission in addressing the analysis of fundamental engineering concepts and principles.
• Contribute to the review, analysis and writing of decision reports, approvals, and permits and licences within established timeframes.
• Assist in the coordination of AUC hearings on facility matters.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in post-secondary studies related to electrical engineering.
• Legally authorized to work in Canada full-time for the duration of the work-term and able to produce documentation upon application (e.g. work permit).
• Must be returning to full-time studies in fall of 2026.
