The AUC is responsible to ensure that the delivery of Alberta’s utility service takes place in a manner that is fair, responsible and in the public interest. We regulate investor-owned natural gas, electric and water utilities and certain municipally owned electric utilities to ensure that customers receive safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates. The AUC ensures that electric facilities are built, operated and decommissioned in an efficient and environmentally responsible way. The AUC also provides regulatory oversight of issues related to the development and operation of the wholesale electricity market in Alberta as well as the retail gas and electricity markets in the province. The ideal candidate As a financial compliance auditor with the AUC, you will lead and conduct financial audits of regulated utilities, focusing on matters related to rates, tolls and tariffs. In this role, you will investigate financial issues, evaluate compliance with regulatory requirements and distill complex information into clear, well-reasoned findings. Your strong analytical skills, attention to detail and ability to view issues from multiple perspectives will be key to your success. You will also prepare thorough, well-structured audit reports that provide the foundation for evidence-based regulatory decisions. Key responsibilities Conduct and lead financial audits of regulated utilities, with a focus on rates, tolls and tariff-related matters. Review and analyze financial statements, operational data and company submissions. Investigate financial issues and assess compliance with regulatory requirements. Formulate and issue information requests to clarify and validate company filings. Synthesize diverse sources of information into clear findings. Strategize lines of inquiry to uncover relevant facts and perspectives. Prepare periodic updates, assessments and recommendations for management. Propose next steps and contribute to the development of audit strategies. Draft comprehensive audit reports that support evidence-based regulatory decisions. Qualifications and competencies A degree in accounting, finance, economics or a related discipline. A professional designation is strongly preferred. Fifteen or more years of experience in financial auditing, ideally within utilities, energy or other regulated industries. Knowledge of rate-setting, utility tolls and tariff processes is a strong asset. Strong analytical and investigative skills, with the ability to objectively assess facts and identify gaps or inconsistencies. Excellent written communication skills, with experience preparing professional reports and assessments. Intellectual curiosity and a drive to ask the right questions.
