Synapse Data Center Power Plant Project

Synapse Real Estate Corp has applied to construct and operate a combined-cycle natural gas-fired power plant with a nominal capacity of approximately 1,400 megawatts (MW) as well as 1,800 MW of emergency and backup diesel generation (the power plant). The power plant will not be connected to the Alberta Interconnection Electric System but will be used to power the on-site data centre load. The application has been filed under the Hydro and Electric Energy Act.

The power plant would be located on the northwest and southwest quarters of Section 4, Township 33, Range 1, west of the Fifth Meridian, east of Highway 2A, in the northeast section of the town of Olds.

Hearing information

The Commission issued a notice of hearing for this proceeding; however, it has not determined the full proceeding schedule at this time. The Commission will communicate the details of the hearing at a later date.

Statements of intent to participate must include your name, address, phone number, legal land location, description of your land in relation to the proposed development and a description of how you, your land, your business or your activities may be affected by the proposed project. Please also briefly describe the issues you would like the AUC to consider when making its decision.

Only parties that have filed statements of intent to participate and have been granted standing may be eligible for funding and to fully participate in the hearing.

Summarized process schedule

On June 16, 2026, the AUC issued a process schedule update where it suspended the current process steps while the AUC prepares additional information requests for Synapse. Following receipt of responses to these information requests the AUC will communicate the revised process steps.
