What we do

The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) is an independent, quasi-judicial agency of the province of Alberta. The AUC is responsible for ensuring that the delivery of Alberta’s utility service takes place in a manner that is fair, responsible and in the public interest.

We regulate investor-owned natural gas, electric and water utilities and certain municipally owned electric utilities to ensure that customers receive safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates. The AUC ensures that electric facilities are built, operated and decommissioned in an efficient and environmentally responsible way. The AUC also provides regulatory oversight of issues related to the development and operation of the wholesale electricity market in Alberta as well as the retail gas and electricity markets in the province.

The ideal candidate

As an electrical engineer in the AUC Facilities division, you’ll conduct entry-level technical analysis for regulatory applications. This could include transmission, power plants, and gas facilities among others. You will leverage your analytical and writing skills to assess and review the engineering and technical aspects of these applications. Your strong writing abilities will support the development of well-informed decisions and your time management skills will be critical in meeting decision deadlines.

*Please note that this position will be called regulatory analyst internally.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate and process the engineering and technical components of facility applications and supporting documentation.
• Develop the ability to recognize deficiencies in applications and prepare correspondence in accordance with AUC requirements to improve the AUC’s understanding of the applications.
• Provide support to other staff and the Commission in addressing the analysis of fundamental engineering concepts and principles.
• Contribute to the review, analysis and writing of decision reports, approvals, and permits and licences within established timeframes.
• Coordinate or assist with AUC hearings on facility matters.
• Participate in information sessions to ensure landowners and other stakeholders are informed about applications and understand their opportunity for participation in the application process.

Qualifications

As the ideal candidate you will possess:

• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
• One to two years of relevant professional experience.
• Experience managing projects and coordinating multiple priorities.
• A solid understanding of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
• Experience preparing technical reports, analyses, technical writing, and other professional documentation.
• Eligibility for registration, or current registration, as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) with APEGA would be considered an asset.
